Cuba has been under Communist rule for almost 60 years. And even the wonderful color palette and the superb light of the Carribean can`t hide the fact that life is quite hard; Cuba is struggling under the embargo from the USA.
However, I felt a spirit of community, a tremendous sense of pride and a willingness to endure to achieve a greater goal, which can be hard to understand for outsiders.
Meeting and talking to Cubans left me with an understanding of a nation that is proud of its achievements in medical care and education. Cubans are fatalistic but quite inventive about the desperate supply situation - I saw older people with the sadness of lost chances in their faces and many young people, joyfully looking forward a brighter future.
"Hasta la Victoria Siempre."
